How Does Crime Stoppers Work?

There is always someone who has information that can help solve crime. Those are the people who can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously and provide a tip that will help investigators identify those responsible. In any investigation police and other law enforcement agencies encounter individuals who will not directly provide information. The three key reasons are:

  • Fear of reprisal
  • An attitude of apathy
  • Reluctance to get involved

Crime Stoppers breaks through these barriers by giving people the opportunity to provide information without directly speaking to police or having to testify in court. Obviously investigators need witnesses to help prove their case in court, but most importantly, they need information that allows them to zero in on a suspect or a criminal operation such as a drug trafficking network.

Tips to Crime Stoppers does not necessarily give police evidence they require to arrest an individual, but puts them on the right track to solve crime. Cash rewards also motivate some people to call or submit online tips anonymously with information that will be vital to investigators.

How To Report A Crime

There are three (3) ways to report a crime while remaining completely anonymous (confidential).

  1. Call the tip line at 652-1234 or 1-800-658-8477. (These phone lines have no recording device.)
  2. Click on the Red Tips button above, there you will find an online form for you to fill out and submit your tip. The form also allows you to Upload a Photo of the person, property, etc., which may help the police in solving the crime.
  3. Text TIPCOP plus your tip to: 274637(CRIMES)

Cash rewards up to $1,000 per incident are distributed anonymously to the person who gives information leading to an arrest and indictment.

All text based tips, online tips and callers remain unknown with no pressure to reveal their identity. Text based tips remain anonymous by routing text messages to an external server where all identifying information is “scrubbed” to protect the sender.

IMPORTANT!At the time of the incident report, the tipster will be given a tip number and password if it is an online submitted tip, a code number if it is a call in tip, or a unique text code if the tip was submitted via texting.

After the arrest and indictment, the tipster will be told how and where to pick up the cash reward.  Crime Stoppers is unable to notify the tipster due to the fact that calls and online tips are not traced in any way.
